EKITI State Commissioner for Environment, Mrs Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, says that the state government has been taking steps to avert flood in the state.

Aluko-Ajisafe says that the efforts in the last two months include clearing of blocked drainages and waterways in areas prone to flooding including Ado, Ikere and Ekiti South West local government areas.

She said, “We have done a lot to avert flooding. In case there is any incident, we are fully prepared to handle it. We are appealing to people not to dispose their wastes into the erosion path, canals and waterways”.

The commissioner said that nothing untoward was being expected in view of efforts so far to avert flooding.

Aluko-Ajisafe said, “We have completed dredging in Ado Ekiti, marking the end of dredging activities at Oonaala, Balemo, Ifesowapo, and the Crowbiz river course.

“Currently, at Onala Zone D, the machine has been tracked back to Zero Point, Elemi Bridge, Afao Road. From there, it will move to Ekiti West L.G.A.

“We are about to start desiltation very soon. Desiltation is crucial to prevent flooding, as it helps to clear the riverbed of silt and debris, ensuring a smooth flow of water and reducing the risk of overflow during heavy rains.

“We are fully prepared to handle any potential flooding. I would also like to urge every citizen of Ekiti State to stay safe during heavy rains.

“Please stay where you are, avoid riding motorcycles or driving cars in the rain, and refrain from walking in flooded areas. Your safety is paramount.
