The All Farmers Association of Nigeria has elected a new National Executive Council led by Muhammad Magaji.

The election of the new 27-member NEC at the AFAN Congress, which held on Wednesday at the 2025 National Agricultural Showground along Abuja-Kefi Road in Nasarawa State, followed a resolution passed by the General Assembly of Farmers.

The Assembly, among other issues, ratified the inclusion of the immediate past National President, Architect Kabir Ibrahim; Reverend Tobias Iwu; Chief Ademola Okeya; and Bassey Edem Iyang as members of the Board of Trustees, as it stipulates a three-year tenure of maximum two terms for all elective offices”.

In his acceptance speech, Magaji expressed commitment to continue to create platforms for collaboration and networking through innovative exchanges which would yield tangible outcomes for the advancement of Nigeria’s agricultural future.

The new AFAN president, who acknowledged the focus and determination of the President Bola Tinubu administration to reposition agriculture and enhance food production and security, sought support of farmers.

He said, “We are calling on all members of AFAN nationwide to give us the maximum support. The President Tinubu-led Federal Government is very committed on the issue of agriculture and welfare of farmers, all they need is an umbrella body of Nigerian farmers”.

Magaji, who said AFAN under his watch would collaborate with the Federal Government to boost food production in the country and enhance food security, said, “We are going to work closely with the Federal Minister of Agriculture”.

His predecessor, Kabiru Ibrahim, expressed confidence in the ability of the Magaji-led NEC to take AFAN to the next level, saying, “I know that there is a lot of work in your hands, and I know you are capable.

“I wish you the best of lucks and wish the AFAN family successful production and enhanced productivity,” Ibrahim said.

The new AFAN National Youth Leader, Chief Tunde Godsfeather Adeyemi, said, “Nigeria’s agriculture is powered by youth – the young farmer who wakes up each morning to cultivate the soil, raise livestock, add value, and sustain the heartbeat of our great nation. Today, we begin a new journey to strengthen that power”.

Adeyemi, who said that agriculture must become more than survival, but prosperity, innovation and national pride, assured that the NEC would “expand training, access to finance and modern tools such as mechanization, drones, irrigation systems and digital agriculture. We will open doors for investment, partnership, and global collaboration”.

He assured young farmers that structures would be built across all states and local governments to ensure they had a voice as he urged state youth leaders and coordinators for cooperation and support in the interest of ensuring food sufficiency in the country.
