“And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “The daughters of Zelophehad speak what is right; you shall surely give them a possession of inheritance among their father’s brothers, and cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them.”
Numbers 27:6-7 NKJV
During the EndSARS protest in 2020, “Soro Soke” (a Yoruba phrase that means “speak up) became a rallying cry for people to speak out against injustice, demand their rights, and hold those in power to account.
It was basically championed by the youths who got tired of the way the nation was drifting away from the path of progress and stability. While it may be difficult to fully assess the impact of the protest, the wave of disruption and destruction was scary enough to serve a cautionary warning to authorities everywhere.
Well, not all speaking up must take a violent approach.
We have a family story in the book of Numbers 27.
A man named Zelophehad did not have any son but daughters.
When he died, his inheritance was not immediately given to his daughters.
They decided to speak up. They contended that their father’s inheritance should not be lost simply because he had no sons.
Moses spoke with the Lord about their case and our text was the response. God asked Moses to give the inheritance to the daughters.
Imagine if they never spoke up!
Their speaking up did not end with receiving the inheritance of their father, it also led to general reforms in Israel.
It became a statute that men who have no sons can have their inheritance passed to their daughters.
Your speaking up can change your family or even an entire nation.
