A 45 years old woman, popularly known as Iya Sunday, has said that she set her 86-year-old mother ablaze because is what she heard from her pastor.
The incident, which happened in the Ondo West Local Government area of Ondo State, according to Iya Sunday was because her mother was allegedly behind her predicament.
A source said that the suspect set the victim ablaze after pouring petrol on her, leaving the octogenarian with burns from head to toe.
The source said that the woman was later rushed to hospital for treatment.
Another source said that the suspect came to her mother’s house on Friday around 5am and called her out before pouring petrol on her and setting her on fire.
The source said, “We don’t know what happened between them before the incident, but the suspect has been arrested by the police for investigation.”
The suspect, narrating what happened, said “I went to my mother’s house around 4am and sat outside. When it was 5am, I called out my mother from the house. Immediately after she came out, not knowing what was happening, I poured petrol on her body and set her on fire.
“The reason is that I went to one pastor for prayer, and he told me that my mother was behind what was happening to me. I did not believe it at first. My mother also took me somewhere to see a woman. After my mother left, the woman also said the same thing.
“I burnt my mother because of what I heard from the pastor and the woman, that I can only be free from bondage when my mother is dead.”
The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, who confirmed the incident, however, said that the victim died on Saturday while receiving treatment in hospital.
The police spokesperson said that the suspect would be charged with murder.
