Beer consumers keep mum over proposed hike in prices

By Nudoiba Ojen

Beer consumers have been at loss over how to react to the increase in the prices of some beer brands announced by the Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc.

NB Plc had said the review in prices became necessary “because of the continued rising input cost and the need to mitigate the impact”.

NB Plc are makers of brands like, “Star lager beer; Gulder lager beer; Maltina, Legend Extra Stout; Amstel Malta; Heineken lager beer; Maltina Sip-it; Fayrouz, which is a non-alcoholic soft drink; Climax, a herbal energy drink; Goldberg lager; Malta Gold; Life Continental lager; Ace Passion, among others.”

Although since May 29 when subsidy on petrol had been removed, all aspects of life of Nigerians had adjusted.

Beer parlours and drinking joints have its share as customers and sales have since reduced as fuel is taking a high chunk from vehicle owners and prices of good and commodities including food items have gone up.

Eben Fadairo said, “Let’s see how the increase goes. We will know how to address it when it happens”.

Ibe Obineche said, “We will breathe. I have nothing to say, but I know life will continue”.

NB Plc had on August 1 announced a price change for its stock-keeping units (SKU) with effect from August 10.

NB Plc had in a letter dated, August 1, 2023, titled, ‘Price review notification,’ signed by the Sales Director, Ayo Lawal, “This is to inform you that we will review the prices of some of our SKUs effective Thursday 10th August 2023.
