Asaba Games: Officials provided kits for me whereas none for athletes – Oyebanji

By John Odunjo

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, has said that government will take decisive action on all those involved in the unfortunate development involving kits for Ekiti athletes in the ongoing National Youths Games in Asaba, Delta State.

Oyebanji said the development might be because some people wanted to make money for themselves, adding, “What happened was an embarrassment to us as a government and the people of Ekiti State.

The government officials in charge of the Ekiti athletes at the sports fiesta kitted the athletes poorly during the opening of the games, following which the governor recalled the General Manager of the state’s Sports Council, Mr Adekunle Adeyemi, from the games.

The State House of Assembly also summoned officials of the Sports Council involved in the games to appear before the House Committee on Youths and Sports on Tuesday.

The governor spoke at an event at Ikere Ekiti on Tuesday.

He said, “They (Sports Council officials) came with a proposal of N25million, and I approved N20million, but they didn’t procure the kits they were supposed to purchase.

“They provided kits for me as the Governor to make it look as if they have done the right thing, whereas they didn’t purchase for those kids who went to represent the state.

“How can you take children to Delta and mess up the whole show? If we sack them now, some people will start pleading for them.

“I am saying this because if we want to clean up the system, the Governor and his cabinet alone cannot do it. Help us to plead with those in government to have the fear of God. Though, the children are doing well because I had to send a psychologist to go and speak with them,” the governor said.
