By John Odunayo

Philanthropist and retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Adedayo Adeoye, has offered scholarship to 24 students of Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE).

The Director of FUOYE Advancement Center, Prof. Olubukola Oyawoye, who unveiled the beneficiaries of the retired DIG Adeoye’s gesture, said they were drawn from different departments within the university.

The event, which held at the Fasina Conference Center under construction at Phase III of the institution, was graced by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Olubunmi Shitu; Registrar, Mr Muftau Adesina Ibrahim; Librarian, Dr Isaac Busayo; Dean of Law, Prof. Olufemi Abifarin; Deputy Director, Advancement Center, Mr Teslim Salahudeen; Mr Olarewaju (SMAO) and Mr Godwin Elabor among others.

Oyawoye said that the scholarship would go a long way to ease the burden of tuition fees on their parents.

She said, “FUOYE students are very lucky to have Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina as the Vice-Chancellor because the interest of FUOYE students matters a lot to him. He does not joke with the welfare of the students. FUOYE students matter.

“FUOYE sought out help through the Advancement Center and it is called an endowment. One of such is this one that came from our father, one of the retired police officers. We have a lot of good police officers in the country and one of them is DIG Adedayo Adeoye, who has been giving out millions of naira as scholarships.”

Oyawoye said, “The scholarship is meant for students who are struggling or find it difficult to pay their school fees. Other VCs might choose to go for other projects, but our VC chose to put the money from the scholarship on the students who struggle to pay their school fees.

“Out of the endowment money, the amount to be given to the lucky students has been set aside and we will immediately disburse it to them as soon as they mark their names. The money is to pay or balance up their school fees” the former Osun State Commissioner said.

She, however, encouraged the students to take advantage and apply for student loan which is the initiative of President Bola Tinubu because “it is your right. Kindly visit the NELFund Desk Officer in the university to do the needful”.

Earlier, FUOYE VC, Fasina, who welcomed all to the Fasina/Adeoye Scholarship Scheme programme, appreciated the donor, Adeoye, for the gesture and as well the Director of the university Advancement Center, Oyawoye, whose connections brought the opportunity.

The VC, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Olubunmi Shittu, advised students and the beneficiaries not to misuse the opportunity so that they would not disappoint the donor, adding, “We are looking forward to seeing you students as leaders tomorrow and be ready to give back to organizations like this university”.

Fasina said, “The motive behind this is that less privileged people will have the opportunity to pursue their academics properly. Making yourself available to study shows your resilience. This is recognition. Your hard work you must stand out in the comity of nations and defend it.

“The scholarship is not just a reward, but also a responsibility. Because you must be ready to support others in the future”.

Shittu said, “I want to use this opportunity to reaffirm the commitment of the VC. So, we want to appreciate the goodwill of the VC.

“This programme is not only for celebrating academics but a celebration for future hope. The future where your knowledge and impacts will be celebrated.

The Registrar, Ibrahim, advised the students to “avoid any form of distraction and remember the sons and daughters of who you are. Try as much as possible to make the donor happy. And I pray the Lord will help you”.
