RESPECTING BOUNDARIES -1

By Eleyitope Linus ARANNILEWA

As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” And he went on. “But you stand here awhile, that I may announce to you the word of God.”” ‭‭
I Samuel‬ ‭9‬:‭27‬ ‭NKJV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

When it was time for Samuel to reveal the mind of the Lord to Saul, he asked him to tell his servant to give them some space.
He needed some privacy to divulge the information. Two things comes to light from this.

Some information are sensitive and one cannot be frivolous with them. One way to access people’s wisdom or maturity is how they handle information. Mature people are more circumspect both in receiving and disseminating information. They are also more careful in responding to the information at their disposal.

Samuel certainly demonstrated that maturity by not throwing the information about the kingdom into the public domain before the time.

Secondly, why did Samuel ask Saul to tell his servant to go ahead?
Why did he not tell him directly himself? Because he knew his limits. Though he was a prophet with a word from the Lord, he had no authority over another man’s servant. It is recklessness to think that you have authority over everybody.

There is no greater recipe for shame and reproach than that. Respecting boundaries is self-respect. Those who do not know how to maintain boundaries don’t fare well in interpersonal relationships. It takes trust to build relationships, and trust is only given to those who know how to keep within their space.
