“You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble;
You shall surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah”
Psalms 32:7 NKJV
On December 17, 2010, the news media was awash with self-immolation of a young Tunisian, Mohammed Bouazizi. That unfortunate incident became the springboard to unrest in many Arab countries.
The series of disturbances on a scale that was before then unknown was tagged, the Arab Spring.
Between then and now, our world has witnessed other gory phenomena. Ranging from kidnapping and banditry in Nigeria to the more recent Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, everywhere is spelling violence and unrest. Wherever you turn in the world, you are confronted with one crisis or another. How should a believer respond to the waves of violence that are spreading across the globe?
Firstly, we should see the unfolding events as a fulfilment of prophecy. There is nothing going on in our world that was not predicted before.
Jesus foretold of the distress that nations would experience – “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring” Luke 21:25 NKJV.
Rather than panic, believers should know that this world is running its course as it is planned. Secondly, we should demonstrate the type of confidence that we see in the psalmist.
In our text, he made God his hiding place, who also would preserve him from trouble.
When this becomes our mindset, we will not panic like those who do not know God.
