MINIMAL REGRETS

By Eleyitope Linus ARANNILEWA

O God, You have taught me from my youth; And to this day I declare Your wondrous works.”
Psalms‬ ‭71‬:‭17‬ ‭NKJV

Chris Coleman provided answer to a question on Quora – “What’s a thing elderly people regret in their lives?”
He responded to the question when he was 64 and his father 94.

Here is his answer:
“After numerous long conversations with my father and based on my own personal experience, the biggest regrets come from simple poor decisions made in our youth, which have major, long-reaching implications later in life.”

Such decisions vary from failing to buy a property early, discontinuing a love interest over minor things that could have been overlooked or disposing something of value that should have been kept. Other sources of regret include being glued to a wrong career or failing to spend necessary time for bonding with loved ones. Some of these regrettable decisions can leave an indelible mark for life.

Youths have abundance of strength but little discretion.
It takes the help of God to rein in on that boundless energy to avoid or at least minimize regrets in the future.

James Addison (1672-1719) wrote a hymn – WHEN ALL THY MERCIES, O MY GOD.
A particular stanza of the hymn captures how God’s help saw him through the turbulence of youth.
It says, “When in the slippery paths of youth with heedless steps I ran, thine arm unseen conveyed me safe, and led me up to man.”
Youths are prone to heedless steps.

Those who desire to overcome such steps that will lead to untold sorrow in the future must lean on God for assistance.
