Hopes of civil servants for a new minimum wage effective from April 1, 2024 is nearing realization as the negotiation committee is billed for inauguration on Tuesday, January 30.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, said President Bola Tinubu had approved the inauguration of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage.

This was disclosed in a letter by Akume, to a labour leader titled “inauguration of the tripartite committee on national minimum wage” dated January 23.

Akume stated in the letter, “The inauguration will take place on Tuesday, 30th January 2024 at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, State House, Abuja at 12.00noon prompt. Members are to be seated by 11.30am.

“In light of the above, you may wish to contact the Secretariat of the Committee in the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission for any enquiries”.

The tripartite committee will comprise representatives of government, organized labour and private sector.

Workers have reiterated that the new minimum wage, which must be a living wage, had become necessary in view of the economic realities occasioned by the removal of subsidy on petroleum products.
