FPI/FUTI Management Boosts Practical Training for Crime Management Students

Students of the Department of Crime Management, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, now the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro (FUTI), embarked on an educational excursion on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, to the Ogun State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran.

The excursion also took the students to the Borstal Training Institution, Adigbe, Abeokuta.

It was organised to expose the students to the practical operations of law-enforcement and correctional institutions, thereby complementing the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom.

During the visit to the Ogun State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, the students were introduced to various aspects of police administration, crime prevention, criminal investigation, intelligence gathering, maintenance of law and order, and the responsibilities of police officers in protecting lives and property.

The students also had the opportunity to interact with experienced police officers, ask relevant questions and gain first-hand knowledge of the procedures, ethics and professional standards guiding policing and criminal investigations in Nigeria.

Also at the Borstal Training Institution, Adigbe, the students were enlightened on the treatment, rehabilitation, education and reintegration of young persons in conflict with the law.

The visit enabled the students to appreciate the importance of counselling, vocational training, discipline, education and correctional programmes in reducing reoffending and helping young persons become responsible members of society.

The excursion was highly interactive, as the students participated actively in the various sessions and demonstrated an impressive understanding of the issues discussed.

The Head of the Department of Crime Management, Mrs Kowait Adeoye, who spoke on behalf of the management headed by the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, and Acting Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro, Dr Mukail Aremu Akinde, expressed appreciation to the police and Borstal Training Institution for providing the students with valuable practical knowledge.

Adeoye said, “On behalf of the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, and Acting Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro, Dr Mukail Aremu Akinde, and the entire management of the institution, I sincerely appreciate the management and personnel of the Ogun State Police Command and the Borstal Training Institution for warmly receiving our students and exposing them to the practical aspects of their discipline.

“Your willingness to share your professional knowledge and experiences has strengthened the connection between what the students learn in the classroom and what is obtainable in the field.”

Adeoye said, “We are deeply grateful to the Rector and Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr Mukail Aremu Akinde, and the entire FPI/FUTI Management for consistently supporting educational initiatives of this nature. Their commitment to practical and experience-based learning continues to create opportunities for our students to develop academically, professionally and personally”.

The HoD also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of academic staff, saying, “I sincerely appreciate our senior lecturers and chief advisers, Dr Akinleke and Barrister Okuwoga, for their fatherly guidance, encouragement and valuable counsel throughout the planning of this excursion.

“They brought their experience, professional relationships and influence to bear in guiding the Department appropriately and ensuring that the programme became a reality. Their contributions to the growth and progress of the Department remain deeply appreciated.

“Our sincere appreciation also goes to the Dean of the School of Management Studies, Barrister Ademola, for his support and commitment to the success of the excursion.

“His intervention in facilitating transportation and other necessary arrangements contributed greatly to the smooth conduct of the programme. We are grateful for his leadership and continued support for the Department”.

A notable moment during the excursion occurred when ASP Opeyemi Oluborode commended the lecturers in the Department of Crime Management for the quality of knowledge imparted to the students.

Oluborode said, “I must commend the lecturers of the Department of Crime Management for the quality of knowledge they have imparted to these students.

“The students displayed a sound understanding of the theoretical aspects of policing and crime management, and this made it easy for them to follow, participate and perform excellently during the practical sessions.

“Their confidence, responses and ability to relate classroom concepts to professional practice clearly reflect the dedication and effectiveness of their lecturers”.

ASP Oluborode also promised to reward two students who distinguished themselves by correctly answering questions during one of the interactive sessions.

In fulfilment of his promise, monetary rewards were subsequently sent to the two students in recognition of their attentiveness, confidence and academic performance.

The gesture served as an encouragement to other students to remain inquisitive, attentive and committed to acquiring valuable knowledge.

Following the successful excursion, the students were encouraged to cultivate a genuine desire for knowledge and take advantage of every opportunity to learn. They were reminded that the excursion represented the beginning of greater academic and professional opportunities and were encouraged to participate actively, ask respectful questions and apply their knowledge meaningfully.

The success of the excursion was also attributed to the dedication and supervision of the members of staff who accompanied the students, including Mr Bankole, Mr Osore, Mr Akinde and Mr Oluwaniyi. Their guidance, commitment and coordination contributed immensely to the smooth conduct and overall success of the educational visit.

Special appreciation was extended to the Head of Department, Mrs Kowait Adeoye, for her purposeful leadership, encouragement and commitment to promoting practical and experience-based learning among students of the Department.

The students were equally commended for their good conduct, active participation, respectful engagement and willingness to learn throughout the excursion.

For the students, the excursion was more than an academic journey. It offered them the opportunity to see classroom theories applied in real-life situations, interact directly with professionals and gain a clearer understanding of the responsibilities associated with their chosen careers.

The memorable experience reflected what could be achieved when institutional management, academic leaders, lecturers, host organisations and students work together to make learning practical, engaging and relevant.
